The Physical Examinations for Vitiligo Patients

1. Wood lamp examination: It applies a kind of long-wave ultraviolet ray whose wave length is about 320nm~400nm, which is helpful to some skin diseases’ diagnosis and is more helpful to the pigmented dermatosis (includes vitiligo) diagnosis. In clinic, it is very hard to find normal skin just by human eyes, especially the hypochromic spots on white skin. But under wood lamp, the vitiligo lesions are pure white and have a striking contrast with the normal skin, and lesion positions have a clear boundary. Especially when the white spots begin to appear hair follicle repigmentation, this recovery is not obvious in natural light at the initial stage. But in wood lamp, we can obviously observe this phenomenon. In wood lamp, nevus depigmentosus, nevus depigmentosus, tuberous sclerosis, decreased inflammation after pigment spots, leprosy decreased pigment spots are usually yellowish white or hoary; tinea versicolor is claybank or yellowish white; nevus anemicus is light white.

2. Friction or pat examination: Use your hand to rub or pat your white spots position and normal skin, when the normal skin becomes to be red, you should observe whether the white spots position becomes red or not, or becomes more obviously white. The latter condition means your white spot may be nevus anemicus.

3. Skin feeling examination: It will check your feeling to temperature, pain and touch. If it is vitiligo, you will feel normal. But if it is leprosy, you will feel slight pain, the pain will slowly decrease and finally disappear.

4. Isomorphic reaction examination: On the normal skin of patients’ shoulder’s deltoid region, sterilize with alcohol,then use disinfection vaccination needle scratches and present to be derrick. After one month, check the scratches positions, depigmentation is positive, and no pigmentation change is negative. According to the examination result, we can judge as follows: if isomorphic reaction is negative, the lesion is stable; if it is positive, the lesion is in development period.

Vitiligo treatment is a long-term process. If you get vitiligo and are getting treatment, you should persist on your treatment for at least about three months. After three months’ treatment, when the doctors tell you that this kind of treatment is not suitable for you and has no effect, you can change your treatment therapy.
