Do you know segmental vitiligo?
Segmental vitiligo refers to the distribution of white patches along the skin area dominated by a cutaneous ganglion segment, which is usually unilateral, and a few have bilateral or ipsilateral multi-segmental distribution.
The incidence of segmental vitiligo accounts for 5%-27.9% of the total vitiligo patients. About 5% of adult patients, and more than 20% of children patients are segmental vitiligo. Segmental vitiligo occurs early and its development trend is easy to predict.
Segmental vitiligo may be related to endocrine disorders in the body. There is a substance called catecholamine, which mainly includes dopamine, norepinephrine and epinephrine. The synthesis of these substances requires a large amount of tyrosine, thus affecting the synthesis of melanin and resulting in segmental vitiligo.
Because of the rapid progression, segmental vitiligo usually causes serious damage to melanocytes in the epidermis. It leads to complete depigmentation, which is difficult for doctors to treat.
At present, there are many treatment methods for segmental vitiligo by clinicians, which are usually oral, topical, physical therapy, traditional Chinese medicine, surgery and other therapeutic means. In the treatment, doctors will adopt different treatment methods according to the development stage and stable stage of segmental vitiligo.
